The Florala City Council on Monday gave final approval to an ordinance that will increase sales taxes on Jan. 1.
At present, Florala collects 2 percent sales taxes. The ordinance raises the city sales tax to 3 percent, a move that was expected to generate $193,000 in the 2015 fiscal year.
In other business, the council:
• Declared two police vehicles surplus. Both are 2009 Ford Crown Vic police pursuit sedans. Chief Sonny Bedsole said one of the vehicles needs to be crushed, the other only needs a transmission. The council will advertise and accept bids for the usable vehicle.
• Set the process for hiring a city magistrate. The current magistrate has been in office for 33 years. The city plans to advertise locally, and to hire someone in December. The new employee would begin work in January and work with the current magistrate until she retires in May.
• Approved a resolution honoring Leonard Nobles, a former mayor and councilman, who died recently.
• Appointed Lisa Windham to the cemetery committee.
• Agreed trick or treat hours should be from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 31.
