Covington Quilter’s Guild show starts Friday

Beginning Friday, quilters will display their very finest quilts for the Covington County Quilter’s Guild’s Quilt Show: Visions of Thread and Fabric.

Members will showcase their quilts in a quilt show held at the Kiwanis Center Fri., Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Sat., Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

“We will have more than 100 quilts,” said member Jane Barber. “We will also have door prizes, placemats, table runners and vendors.”

“We have one every two years,” group president Jan Harbuck said. “It takes that long to organize. We try not to show quilts that have already been shown.”

The last quilt show the group sponsored was two years ago.

Tickets are also on sale for the guild’s donation quilt, which will help raise money for the Covington County Child Advocacy Center. The drawing will be held Nov. 8.

Plans for the child advocacy center were announced in April. The center will operate under a partnership among Andalusia Regional Hospital, the Department of Human Resources, the district attorney’s office and law enforcement agencies throughout the county.

Harbuck said the group narrowed down a list to three or four for which they could donate the funds raised from the quilt raffle and the CAC won.

Tickets are $1 and may be purchased from any member.

Admission to the event is $5.

Community service is vital to the group’s members, and Harbuck said they have previously donated to Habitat for Humanity, the Dream Park project and Crossover Ministries, to name a few.

Additionally, the Guild keeps two quilts in each patrol car in the county and donates quilts to foster children.

Harbuck said the group meets the second Tuesday of each month for a business meeting and the fourth Tuesday of each month for a workshop, at 6 p.m., at the PowerSouth board room.

“New members are welcome,” Barber said.

“And you don’t know how to quilt,” Harbuck said.
