Doggie bags and walking shoes will be needed for the 10th Annual Deep South Doggie Dash and Strut Your Mutt Walk today.

The Andalusia Area Humane Society (AAHS) sponsors the event, and all proceeds stay in Covington County for community-wide programs by the AAHS.

Registration for the event starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Robinson Park on Church Street.

AAHS Debra Evans said this is a dog-friendly, family event.

“Anyone can participate, and spectators are encouraged to attend,” Evans said. “We do ask that people only bring dogs that are friendly, leashed and current on vaccinations.”

There is a $20 registration fee, which includes all events; kids with dogs races, the strut your mutt walk, best dog costume contest, fall photos with pets, event T-shirt, goodie bag filled with useful things for people and dogs, light refreshments and drawing for door prizes.

The kids and dog races are divided into four age divisions: 4 and under, 5 to 7, 8 to 10 and 11 to 13, and the strut your mutt walk is for adults and teens.

Evans said parents are welcome to race with their children, and first, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in all kid races.

Additionally, ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in the best dog costume contest.

“This is a great opportunity to make a difference, and you can do it with your dog beside you,” Evans said.
