The Florala Wildcats’ junior varsity basketball teams won 2-out-of-3 games against the Pleasant Home Eagles Wednesday in Florala.

The Wildcats’ eighth grade boys defeated the Eagles 18-11. Leroy Mitchell led the Wildcats with 8 points and Jamie Hawkins led the Eagles with 7 points.

“I was extremely proud of the guys tonight. They stepped up their defense, and did exactly what we worked on in practice,” Wildcats’ coach Troy Stewart said.

With the loss the Eagles eight grade boys record is now 5-4.

“We couldn’t get a basket to go, and we turned the ball over a lot,” Eagles coach Troy Turman said. “The kids kept fighting, so I was proud of that.”

In junior varsity action, the Wildcats topped the Eagles 17-8. Kaiden LeMaire had 6 points for the Wildcats and Abi McDuffie led the Eagles with 5 points.

“The girls did a great job defensively and offensively,” Stewart said. “We have improved each game, and the girls are starting to notice the small things it takes to come away with a win.”

In the seventh grade boys’ game the Eagles defeated the Wildcats 29-13. Brenden Douglas played lights out for the Eagles dropping 23 points in the victory. Lee Stewart was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 5 points.

“We played hard, and the kids were excited,” Turman said. “I was happy for them.”

The win was the seventh grade Eagles’ first of the season.

“I only had two starters, which hurt, but the other guys stepped up and played great,” Stewart said.
