The Straughn Lady Tigers fought off an early deficit to defeat the Ashford Lady Yellow Jackets 58-42 in an area contest Tuesday night in Straughn.

 

The Lady Tigers opened up the contest with a 7-0 lead, but the Lady Yellow Jackets went on a 12-0 run in the final few minutes of the first period to take a 12-7 lead. Brentley Armstrong got the scoring started for the Lady Tigers with a 3-pointer from the corner. Armstrong ended the first period with 5 points. Jacie Williamson had 2 points for the Lady Tigers.

 

The Lady Tigers started applying full-court pressure to the Lady Yellow Jackets, and it caused several turnovers that the Lady Tigers converted into points. As a result, the Lady Tigers took a 21-18 lead into halftime. Janelle Nurse and Williamson had clutch 3-pointers that helped to Lady Tigers take the lead. Williamson finished the second period with 7 points.

 

In the third period, the Lady Tigers kept applying tremendous pressure, and by the end of the period the Lady Tigers had built a 40-27 lead. The Lady Tigers went on a 17-0 run in the first five minutes of the third period, and that would be the difference in the game. Williamson added 6 more points in the third period.

 

The Lady Tigers kept the pedal to the metal, and finished of the Lady Yellow Jackets 58-42. Williamson had 3 more points, and Armstrong finished the final frame with 7 points.

 

Armstrong led the Lady Tigers with 21 points, and Williamson totaled 16 points in the contest.

 

“We didn’t really know how to play them in the first half,” Lady Tigers’ head coach Scott Kinsaul said. “Credit the girls for applying great pressure in the third period, and we started hitting shots. They played us tough tonight, and we know they will play us tough next week when we go there.”
