The Straughn Tigers knocked of the Headland Rams 55-40 Thursday night in the first round of the 4A area 2 boys’ tournament in Andalusia.

 

The Rams opened the game with a quick bucket, but the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to take the lead back, The Rams tied the game up at 8-8 with just under two minutes left in the first. Marshall Farley then knocked down a 3-pointer, and finished off an and-one opportunity to give the Tigers a 14-8 lead heading in the second period.

 

Rollin Kinsaul put in the first points of the second period for the Tigers just over two minutes into the period. Johnathon Driver got a steal and turned it into 2 points to give the Tigers a 10-point lead.  Brice Scott added 4 points to give the Tigers a 22-11 lead at halftime.

 

The Tigers got a little cold in the third period, but still managed to stay up 33-23 going into the final period. Farley had 5 points in the period, and Tucker Lawless ended the third with 4 points. Scott accounted for 2 more points on the night.

 

The Rams came out firing in the final period, and with just under four minutes remaining the Rams trailed 42-38. The Tigers remained vigilant, and outscored the Rams 13-2 over the remainder of the period for a 55-40 victory. Scott lifted the Tigers with 10 points in the final frame. Kinsaul chipped in the 6 points, Lawless finished with 4 points in the final period.

 

Scott led the Tigers with 23 points. Lawless, Kinsaul and Farley each finished with 10 points.

 

“We played well tonight,” Tigers’ head coach Rusty Andrews said. “There was about a two minute span where we let it get close, and we looked like we might have panicked a little. Then my seniors stepped up and took care of business. Defensively, this was probably our best game of the season. Offensively, we were more patient and didn’t look for 3’s as much. We played Tiger basketball tonight.”
