Andalusia has a new bible study group that’s helping runners get ready to compete in 5K races.

The new group is called Run for God, and it was started Darrin and Jennifer O’Neal. It is a 12-week program that uses scripture and training to form a bond between runners and Christian values.

“The program uses scripture to parallel faith and endurance with running,” Jennifer said. “It’s a good place for someone to come that would like to train to run in 5K races.”

The program is a three-part process that includes a bible study, training tips and running.

“The program is designed to take someone who isn’t a strong runner and get them in shape to run a 5K,” Jennifer said. “It is a gradual process that expands each week.”

The group meets every Saturday at 7:30 a.m., at the McClung and White accounting office for the bible study.

“On Saturdays we meet and have a bible study and accountability time,” Jennifer said. “Then, we go over different training tips for running. We talk about things like gear, breathing, stretching, nourishment and anything else that has to do with running.”

The group also meets at 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to run.

“There isn’t a bible study on Tuesday and Thursday,” Jennifer said. “Those nights we just run, and if you can’t make it to those it is no problem.”

Jennifer said those who don’t attend would still need to run on their own to avoid falling behind on the conditioning.

Jennifer and her husband started Andalusia’s Run for God so that they could grow deeper in their faith, and also meet others in the process that are seeking the same.

“I saw a Run for God advertisement in a running magazine about a year ago,” Jennifer said. “I researched it, but quickly forgot about it. Then a couple of months ago I was running and felt God compelling me to start this program here in our town. I really have a passion for running, and for serving God. Over the years many people have asked me how I started running, and also people who just think I’m crazy for doing it. There is real interest either way.”

Jennifer said that it is not too late for anyone interested to sign up.

“Anyone can still join us,” Jennifer said. “We have only had one meeting so far, so it isn’t too late to join and be caught up. If you wait too long it will be difficult to catch up with the rest of the group.”

Anyone interested in joining may do so on the Andalusia Run for God Facebook page.
