It turned out that Andalusia High School head softball coach Wayne Sasser had no reason to be superstitious when it came to extending his team’s winning streak to 13 games.

 

The Lady Bulldogs (27-5) shutout the Pleasant Home Lady Eagles (10-9) 3-0 for its twelfth consecutive win and then topped Straughn 15-5 in five innings to make it a lucky 13 in a row.

 

Andalusia left-handed pitcher Hannah Reynolds proved her numbers from last week were no fluke. She was listed as among the top softball players in the state for her perfomance last week as an honorable mention selection for the Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honor.

 

Last week, Reynolds struck out 20 in a 10-inning 2-0 win over Greenville for the sixth-ranked Class 4A Andalusia. She didn’t allow a walk. She didn’t allow a walk. She did not allow a run in 29 total innings – earning three wins and getting a no decision in one game when she left after taking a line drive off her face. She struck out 46 overall and also went 10-of-23 at the plate with eight RBIs in seven games.

 

She was up to her tricks again Thursday against the Lady Eagles pitching a complete game no-hitter and the only two batters to reach base did so on dropped third strikes. She recorded 17 strikeouts in the win.

 

The fourth inning was the big inning for the Lady Bulldogs’ offense scoring all three runs. Reynolds helped her cause with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Morgan Battey.

 

Ashley Johnson then singled to se the stage for Holley Bass.

 

Bass came up big with a two-RBI double and went to third on the throw to the plate. She scored when Anna Henderson followed her in the batting order with an RBI-single.

 

Caitlin Edmondson, Hanna Bush and Battey also had one hit each in the win.

 

The Lady Bulldogs return to the diamond after win to play the Straughn Lady Tigers.

 

Katie Howell started the game in the pitcher’s circle against Straughn (4-10) and got the win. She went three innings allowing two runs on five hits. Sarah Wofford pitched two innings in relief allowing three runs on three hits.

 

Johnson had a big game on offense going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run inside-the-park home run. Edmondson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Reynolds was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Battey was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Bass was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Rachel Jones was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Laura Frye was 1-for-1. Meredith Greene was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Henderson was 1-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI.

 

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Dothan today to play in the Northview High School tournament. Andalusia plays Northview at 7:45 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs play Flomaton at 9 a.m. on Saturday and then elimination play will begin in the tournament.

 

Andalusia is ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 4A in the latest ASWA Poll released Thursday night.
