Beach traffic slowing down as spring break ends

Florala Police Chief Sonny Bedsore said the beach traffic running through the border town is light to moderate.

“Things have kind of slowed down,” Bedsole said. “Most of the spring break stuff is over.”

Spring break season for most school-aged students has been going on for the past month.

Bedsole said the majority of traffic is coming down Hwy. 331 because Hwy. 55 is being detoured, adding that the detour has helped traffic get through town.

Bedsole said his patrolmen have been mainly doing line patrol, working traffic, enforcing the speed limits and making sure no one is following too closely.

With the high volume of traffic, FPD arrests have been higher, too.

“Literally, all of them have had drugs on them,” Bedsole said of the arrests. “Some had cocaine, meth (methamphetamine) and prescription drugs. We’ve seen all of it. Hashish we’ve seen quite a bit.”

School will let out for summer pretty soon and Bedsole said he is expecting traffic to stay steady through Labor Day.

“It’s warming up and people are starting to make trips down to the beach,” he said.
