Lady Tigers top Ashford, fall to Headland

After rain kept Straughn from playing any softball games last week, the Lady Tigers traveled to Ashford and defeated the Lady Yellow Jackets 7-2, but fell to Headland 10-6 on Saturday.
In the first game of the day, the Lady Tigers raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Katelyn Kinsaul led off the contest with a single to left field, and later came around to score on the passed ball.
Jacie Williamson put the Lady Tigers up 3-0 with a double to center field that plated Mollie Stewart and Brentley Armstrong.
AHS got one run back in the bottom of the first off a bases-loaded walk from Lady Tigers’ starting pitcher Hayden Willis.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Yellow Jackets scored on a passed ball to get the score back to within one.
The Lady Tigers broke the game wide open in the top of the seventh inning after Dee Gantt and Stewart reached safely to start the inning.
Armstrong stepped in with two on and one out in a one run game, and blistered a three-run bomb over the left field fence to put the Lady Tigers up 6-2.
Kristen Peavey followed Armstrong with a solo home run to left to give the Lady Tigers a 7-2 advantage.
Willis retired the Lady Yellow Jackets in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
Armstrong led the Lady Tigers with three RBIs in the contest. Willis picked up the win after throwing a complete game, and striking out eight Lady Yellow Jackets.
Following the game in Ashford, the Lady Tigers made the short trek over to Headland, but this time it didn’t go the way the Lady Tigers would have hoped.
The Lady Rams went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning off two hits, a walk and an error.
In the top of the second, the Lady Tigers battled back, and got an RBI single from Kinsaul to cut the Yellow Jackets’ lead down to one run.
The Lady Tigers took the lead in the top of the third inning when Peavey connected on her second home run of the day that put the Lady Tigers up 3-2.
In the top of the fourth, the Lady Tigers tacked on two more runs to take a 5-2 advantage.
Willis led off the fourth with a towering solo home run, and Armstrong drove in Stewart with a double.
The Lady Rams scratched back in the bottom of the fourth with two runs, and trailed the Lady Tigers 5-4 heading into the fifth inning.
HHS took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs on four hits and one error that put the Lady Rams up 7-5 with two innings remaining.
Peavey brought the Lady Tigers back within one with single to left field.
The Lady Rams opened up the floodgates in the bottom of the sixth and took a 10-6 advantage.
The Lady Tigers went three-up-three-down in the top of the seventh to end the contest.
