GULF SHORES — The Straughn Lady Tigers just didn’t have an answer for LAMP starting pitcher Reagan Watkins, and fell 6-2 to the Lady Golden Tigers in the first round of the AHSAA Class 4A South Regional tournament in Gulf Shores on Thursday.

LAMP went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first off two walks and a double off Straughn starting pitcher Dee Gantt. Watkins drove in the first run for LAMP.

Gantt then was replaced on the mound during the bottom of the first by Hayden Willis.

Watkins kept the Lady Tigers off balance all day, and at one point struck out eight straight batters.

Courtney Ray put LAMP up 3-0 on a single in the bottom of the fifth.

Straughn broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning when Katelyn Kinsaul ripped an opposite-field single that drove in Dallas Mackoff from third. The Lady Tigers threatened to score more, but Watkins 12th strikeout ended the inning.

LAMP added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-1.

The Lady Tigers weren’t ready to give up yet, and Kristen Peavey led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run. It was Peavey’s fifth home run of the season, but the Lady Tigers just couldn’t muster another run.

“We just have to hit the ball,” Straughn head coach Kenny Skipper said after the first game. “Right now, we just aren’t very consistent at the plate. Can’t take anything away from LAMP. They are a good team, and she (Watkins) is a very good pitcher. It was a tough draw, but we can still win it all.”

Straughn’s second game wasn’t complete when The Star-News went to press Thursday night.
