Pirates win city Babe Ruth championship

The Pirates won the Babe Ruth city league championship with a 13-6 victory over the Cardinals Tuesday night at Andalusia High School.

 

In the top of the first inning, the Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Will Clark drove in the first two runs of the game with a triple to left field.

 

Clark then came around to score on passed ball one batter later.

 

The Cardinals turned right around in the bottom half of the first inning, and took the lead with a four-run inning.

 

Garrett Davis drove in John Dubose with an infield single for the Cardinals first run of the game. Brandon Gurley tacked on two runs with a single that plated Jacob Cravey and Davis.

 

Gurly scored on an error hit off the bat of Cameron Maurer to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead after one inning.

 

A five-run inning in the top of the third gave the Pirates a lead that they wouldn’t give up.

 

Tyler Martin scored on an error off the bat of Clark to tie the game up, and Clark later scored on a passed ball to give the Pirates the lead.

 

Branston Wallace drove in Sebaskin Stallworth with an RBI single, and Wallace scored on single from Dawson Jernigan. Jernigan then scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ashley Odom to give the Pirates an 8-4 lead.

 

The Pirates added another run in the top of the fourth when Wallace was plunked with the bases loaded.

 

The Cardinals final run of the contest came in the bottom of the fourth when Cravey scored on a passed ball.

 

Andrew Wood, Jake Walker and Clark each scored on errors in the top of the sixth for the Pirates, and Wallace drove in the game’s final run with a single.

 

Wallace led the Pirates at the plate going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Clark picked up the win on the mound, and also drove in three runs.

 

Gurley led the Cardinals going 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
