County league host 10U district All-Stars

Covington County and Opp’s 10 All-Stars beat Brantley and Brewton, respectively, in district action Thursday night at Johnson Park.

Covington County topped Brantley 16-5, and Opp defeated Brewton 12-0.

COVINGTON COUNTY 16, BRANTLEY 5

Covington County All-stars knocked off Brantley 16-5 in round one of the district tournament Thursday night at Johnson Park.

The county All-stars plated six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, county struck for six more runs.

Mason Anderson led the way for county going 3-for-3 with a walk and an inside-the-park home run.

“There is room for improvement,” County coach Kyle Adams said. “We did a good job. Everyone was putting the bat on the ball.”

Covington County All-stars will play tonight against Evergreen at 6.

OPP 12, BREWTON 0

Opp scored nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to put the pressure on early.

John Helms, Robbie Gafford, Cale Sumblin, Jake Coon and Owen Patterson each drove in a run in the inning.

Sumblin picked up the win on the mound for Opp. He struck out seven batters in four innings, and only gave up three hits and one walk.

­”We played well,” Opp coach Chris Stuard said. “We came out and hit the ball and did what we needed to do. Cale pitched a shutdown game. That’s as close to perfect as we can play.”

Opp will play the winner of Andalusia and East Brewton tonight at 8.
