April 29 airpower summary: C-130s help sustain operations

There could soon be C130s in one of the twin hangars built to house the large military aircraft at the South Alabama Regional Airport.

The airport authority is negotiating a contact with Ronnie Kearns of The Kearns Group LLC, who would like to lease one of the two hangars on a month-to-month basis.

At present, the airport authority has an agreement with DRS, which currently pays $3,000 per month, and has the first right of refusal on a lease option. To lease the hangar to Kearns, the airport authority will need DRS’s agreement, or will have to terminate its agreement with DRS.

DRS has been contacted, but has not given a formal response, SARA Co-Director Jed Blackwell said.

Kearns, who previously managed Vector, had been working with the Covington County economic Development Commission to find potential clients for the space.
