Opp claims 10U district championship

Andalusia eliminated Brantley with a 13-3 victory in the loser’s bracket of the 10U All-Star district tournament at Johnson Park on Saturday.

 

 

 

Brantley got one run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead in the contest.

 

 

 

In the bottom of the first, the Andalusia squad got a leadoff single from Britt Cotton followed by a walk to Dylan Jackson. Garrett Blackston then came up with one out in the inning and drove in Cotton and Jackson with a triple.

 

 

 

Blackston then scored on a passed ball to give Andalusia a 3-1 lead.

 

 

 

Mitch McGlamory stepped in next and drove a pitch into the outfield for a triple. Aksh Patel then drove in McGlamory with a single. TyCameron Jackson followed with a single that plated Patel to give Andalusia a 5-1 advantage at the end of one inning.

 

 

 

In the bottom of the second, Blackston singled with one out, before scoring on a passed ball a few batters later. McGlamory walked and scored on a passed ball. Patel walked and scored on a passed ball. Jackson walked and then scored on an error by the Brantley first baseman to put Andalusia on top 9-1.

 

 

 

Brantley added two runs in the top of third inning to bring the score to 9-3.

 

 

 

Christian Walker reached on a single to start the bottom of the third, and Blackston drove in Walker with a double to go up 10-3. Blackston scored on a passed ball a few pitches later to go up 11-3.

 

 

 

Frank Allen Gafford walked with one out in the inning, and two batters later Jackson drove Gafford in with a single. Jackson came around to score on an error to give Andalusia a 13-3 lead.

 

 

 

Andalusia kept Brantley off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth for a 13-3 victory.

 

 

 

In their second elimination game of the day, Andalusia fell to Brewton and ended their season.

 

 

 

 

 

Opp 13 Covington County 3

 

 

 

Opp earned a spot in the 10U All-Star’s district championship game after defeating the Covington County All-Stars 13-3 Saturday at Johnson Park.

 

 

 

Opp went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first when Jaxon Castleberry scored on passed ball after drawing a walk to lead off the inning.

 

 

 

In the top of the second, Micah Turner started with a double, and scored on an error off a ball hit by Zachary Byrd. Byrd scored on sacrifice bunt from Josh Hawkins to give the County a 2-1 lead.

 

 

 

The lead didn’t last long, as Cale Sumblin crushed the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the second over the fence in left field for a home run that tied the game.

 

 

 

In the bottom of the third, Opp took advantage of several walks and errors, and scored six runs to take an 8-2 lead.

 

 

 

The County got one final run in the top of the fourth inning when Nathan Fowler tripled to open the inning, and later scored on a passed ball.

 

 

 

Opp’s Robbie Gafford reached on a fielder’s choice, and came around to score on a single from Tripp Hawthorne. At the end of four innings, Opp was on top, 12-3.

 

 

 

After holding the County to zero runs in the top of the fifth, Opp’s Jake Coon reached on an error, and scored on a single from Owen Patterson for the final run of the game.

 

 

 

Covington County 7 Brewton 6

 

 

 

In a must win game, the County knocked out Brewton in a hard-fought elimination game to determine who would face Opp in the championship game.

 

 

 

“It was a good win,” County coach Kyle Adams said. “Hawkins pitched one of the best games I’ve ever seen in a 10U game.”

 

 

 

Opp 12 Covington County 0

 

 

 

In the district championship game, Opp topped Covington County with a 12-0 win in four innings.

 

 

 

Opp went up 3-0 in the top of the first when Castleberry drove in Patterson with a double, and then scored on a passed ball. Hawthorne drew a walk, and later scored on a passed ball.

 

 

 

In the top of the second, John Helms drove in Andrew Danford with a single to give Opp a 4-0 lead.

 

 

 

Opp went up 6-0 in the top of the third when Sumblin drove in a pair of runs with a single. Sumblin then scored on a passed ball to give up a 7-0 advantage.

 

 

 

In the top of the fourth, Gafford drove in two runs with a double, and three runs came across on passed balls to give Opp a 12-0 lead.

 

 

 

Opp shutdown the County in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn a 12-0 victory.

 

 

 

“We did a great job the whole tournament,” Chris Stuard said. “We only had one game even go five innings. I’m proud of every one of these kids. We wanted Cale Sumblin to get his second shutout of the tournament, but he ran into a bit of trouble there at the end. So we called in our closer, Gafford, and he shut the door. I’m looking forward to seeing what these boys can do at state.”
