Covington County 10U, 12U pick up big wins to start state

Covington County’s 10U and 12U softball All-Star teams opened up the state tournament with wins Thursday night in Brewton with the 10Us taking down Alex City 12-1, and the 12Us knocked off Brewton 8-7, but fell in their second games on Friday.

 

 

 

10U COVINGTON COUNTY 12, ALEX CITY 1

 

 

 

Covington County jumped out front 4-1 on Alex City in the first inning.

 

In the second inning Covington County added one more run to take a 5-1 lead.

 

Covington County put the hammer down in the third inning, and tacked on four additional runs.

 

Three more runs in the fourth inning led to Covington County winning by the mercy rule.

 

Kayden Weaver picked up the win for Covington County in the pitcher’s circle.

 

She’Rae Coleman had a triple in the win. Logan Fuqua, Ivy Youngblood, A.J. Singletary and Abbi Glidewell each had singles for Covington County in the win.

 

 

 

12U COVINGTON COUNTY 8, BREWTON 7

 

 

 

Brewton took an early lead after scoring four runs in the opening inning, and added another run in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

 

Covington County scratched back in the bottom of the second inning, and cut the lead down to 5-1.

 

The game remained 5-1 until the bottom of the fourth when Covington County added two runs to bring the score to 5-3.

 

In the bottom of the fifth, the Covington County bats got hot and they plated four runs to take a 7-5 lead after five innings of play.

 

Brewton fought back under pressure, and tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth inning.

 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Daisy Cordle reached on an error, and Tori Hart promptly drove her in with the game-winning single to give Covington County a walk-off win to open up the state tournament.

 

Amie Catrett picked up the win for Covington County, after coming into the game in the top of the fourth with them trailing 5-1.

 

Olivia Whitefield led the way at the plate for Covington County with a triple and single. Hart finished with a pair of singles. Ashlyn Johnson and Brianna Knoll each had a double in the win. Natalie Schwartz, Maggie Wilkerson and Cordle each had singles in the win.

 

 

 

10U COVINGTON COUNTY 12, BREWTON 15

 

 

 

Brewton went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning off one hit, two errors and a passed ball.

 

Covington County battled back in the bottom of the first inning when Coleman singled to open in the bottom of the inning. After stealing second and third, Coleman scored on passed ball to cut the lead to 2-1.

 

Lizzy Cross followed by drawing a walk, and came across to score on a single from Fuqua that tied the game, 2-2.

 

Covington County took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Singletary drove in Fuqua with on a fielder’s choice.

 

Brewton went back on top in the top of the second inning with a three-run double from Ball with two outs in the inning.

 

Brewton took a 7-3 lead after a two-out error lead to two more runs in the top of the second.

 

In the bottom of the second inning, Coleman reached on a single with two outs. After stealing her way around to third, Coleman scored on passed ball to cut the lead to 7-4.

 

Brewton went up 12-4 in the top of the third inning off three walks, two hits and an error.

 

In the top of the fourth, Brewton added two more runs to take a 14-4 lead, and needed just three outs to win by mercy rule.

 

With their backs against the wall, the Covington County squad showed some muster, and four straight singles from Glidewell, Courtney Griggs, Hailey Ward and Coleman cut the lead to 12-6. Coleman’s third single of the game drove in Glidewell and Griggs.

 

With two hits, Amy Garner drove in a run after reaching on a error, and an error of the bat of Youngblood lead to two more runs to bring the score to 14-9 after four innings of play.

 

Brewton added a run in the top of the fifth to go up 15-9.

 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Coleman led off the inning with her fourth single of the game, and Cross followed with a single of her own. Coleman came around to score on an error off the bat of Fuqua.

 

Garner followed with a RBI single that scored Cross, and the final run of the game came on RBI from Youngblood.

 

“We got down early, but the girls didn’t give up,” Covington County coach Micah Garner said. “They played hard and gave us a chance to win. We just came up a little short there at the end.”

 

 

 

12U COVINGTON COUNTY 1 ALEX CITY 11

 

 

 

Schwartz lead off the game for Covington County by drawing a walk, and came around to score on fielder’s choice from Ashlyn Joyner to give them an early 1-0 lead.

 

The lead, however, didn’t last long as Alex City plated nine runs in the bottom of the first inning.

 

Alex City went up 10-1 in the bottom of the second inning.

 

In the bottom of the third inning, Covington County bowed up, and got a big out at the plate to save a run.

 

After Covington County went three-up-three-down in the top of the fourth, Alex City scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to win by way of the mercy rule.

 

“That was a tough one,” Covington County coach Eric Schwartz said. “But this is still pool play so we have plenty of games left.”
