Covington County’s 10U softball All-Stars were on a mission coming into Saturday’s championship bracket at the state tournament in Brewton, and that mission was accomplished as the hoisted the championship trophy following a 7-3 victory over Tri-County in the championship game.

To get into the championship game Covington County had to get past a tough Brewton team, who had beaten them 15-12 on Friday.

The girls from Covington County weren’t worried about what happened the day before, and set their sights on Saturday. Goal one of the day was accomplished with a 3-1 win over Brewton.

Kayden Weaver was outstanding on the mound, striking out four batters and only allowing one run in six innings of work.

Amy Garner scored two runs in the win, and Weaver scored one run to help her own cause.

In the championship game, Covington County squared off with Tri-County and trailed 3-1 at the end of the first inning, but battled back to win 7-3.

“We went down early,” Covington County coach Micah Garner said. “But Kayden Weaver and Logan Fuqua pitched great and didn’t allow another run in the game.”

Garner scored two more runs in the contest, for a total of four runs on the day. Lizzy Cross, Ivy Youngblood, Courtney Griggs, Weaver and Fuqua each scored one run in the championship game.

“It was a very strong day for our pitchers and defensive,” Garner said. “After giving up 25 runs on Friday, we only gave up four on Saturday. It was an outstanding day. We played great all the way around. I was extremely proud of the great team effort. They way played together and did very well. They have worked very hard for this, and all of them made a difference.”
