Family Dollar to open Aug. 31

Months after it was slated to open, the new Family Dollar in Opp now has an official opening date – Aug. 31.

In February, Public Relations and Media Relations Manager Bryn Winburn said the new location, which is located at 371 North Main St., would open in late spring.

Winburn did not say Friday the reason for the delay.

The new store will boast 8,300 square feet of retail space, which Winburn said is standard for new Family Dollar retail locations.

“We are looking to hire eight to 10 team members from within the community,” she said. “Obviously, we hope that our current team members at our location will come with us.”

Since this is a relocation, WInburn said the current location will stay open until the completion of the new one.

The new location will allow for more product selection for customers, she said.

“Last year, we introduced more SKUs on our shelves,” she said. “We expanded our health and beauty selection and some of our clothing lines and added clothing items.”

The current location, she said, places restrictions on how much they can sell due to its size.

“The new store will feature our new layout,” she said. “Everything is labeled very well, and the aisles are wider to provide an overall better experience for our shoppers.”

Opp Mayor John Bartholomew said Friday that he is excited for the expansion.

“We are excited,” he said. “It’s a free-standing store, and it’s an asset to our city. It shows that our city is prospering forward. We have a lot of new residents coming in and building homes here, and this will be a nice asset for them and our existing residents.”

Bartholomew said he was pleased to see that Family Dollar would be adding jobs.

“A larger store creates more employees,” he said. “They have a nice location, too.”
