As soon as she began seeing publicity for this year’s ice bucket challenge, Stephanie Castleberry-Dubose knew she needed to get to work.

The Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $100 million for research and treatment of ALS last year, and scientists say that the money the ALS Association invested has already begun paying dividends for research into the devastating disease.

But the devastation of that disease is something Dubose knows all too well. Her father, Randy Castleberry, died from ALS almost two years ago.

“When he battled it, it was a long time, before anyone knew what he had,” whe said. “He was very honorable about it; very quiet about it. The whole time he was sick, he knew his only chance for survival is a cure.”

So while she is happy to see events that fund research, Dubose said she also wants do help families who are burdened with the expenses of battling ALS.

“Dad was sick about seven years,” she said. “It started in his fingers and hands.”

The family was fortunate that he had good insurance and a great support system, she said. Still, she feels the burden for others.

“When I saw ice bucket challenge, I was like, ‘What can we do,’ ” she said.

The result is Randy’s Hope for a Cure, a fundraiser on Sat., Aug. 29, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Crystal Springs Park in Red Level.

Dubose is looking for sponsors, vendors, and participants.

Dubose said she plans to do a variation of the ice bucket challenge with the very cold waters of the springs.

“There will be a table set up around the spring,” she said. “We’ll have a donation bucket and allow people to challenge each other, and there will be a video camera set up.

Food will be available, and Dubose said she is charging $20 for vendors. She also needs volunteers to make baked goods.

An account for the cause also has been established at Wells Fargo, and deposits may be made to Randy’s Hope for a Cure. Donations also may be mailed to 30899 County Road 107, Red Level, AL 36474.
