Baptists say more need help feeding families
The Christian Service Center is on track to have a record-breaking year, officials said Friday.
Leroy Cole, church and community ministries director for the Covington Baptist Association, said the organization is on track to give away 400,000 pounds of food this year.
That’s a number that continues to trend upward each year.
Last year, the organization gave away more than 300,000 pounds; in 2013 the ministry donated 279,000 pounds and an estimated 246,000 pounds in 2012.
Cole said they usually give five pounds of food per person per month for each family.
The ministry receives food from the Bay Area Food Bank, and Cole said they aren’t in any need of food right now.
“It’s truly amazing,” he said.
Cole said people who receive food must meet certain income requirements.
“They can come in and interview and get food once a month,” he said.
Additionally, shoppers at the CSC thrift store are vital to the food program, he said.
