New sidewalks are coming to Opp, officials announced this week.

The city council approved an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for a $374,000 Transportation Alternative Program grant.

The city’s matching portion is $93,000.

In March, the council approved a resolution to seek nearly $504,000.

Mayor John Bartholomew said he thought it could be as far out as May before the project begins, but hopefully it would begin by January.

The proposed project would place sidewalks on North Main Street, Stewart Street and Maloy to Opp High School.

This is a continuation of sidewalks started in 2012.

In June 2012, the city of Opp was awarded a $156,000 grant that came from a Safe Routes to School grant and sidewalks were placed going to Opp Elementary School.
