The Bible promises Christians that “the generous will themselves be blessed for they share their food with the poor.”

That’s exactly what the Society of St. Vincent de Paul does throughout the year, and Saturday, they are asking the public to help them give back to the local community.

The organization will host its annual “Walk for the Poor,” a two-mile walk beginning at Christ the King Catholic Church.

Organizer Tommie Powers said all money raised from the walk will got back to the poor.

“Twice a month we hand out groceries,” he said. “When we can afford it, we help with utilities. Whatever we can do to help we try to.”

Powers said they probably average feeding 70 families per Monday.

“We have quite a bit on hard times,” he said. “The Bible says to feed my people. So that’s what we are doing.”

Powers said to participate in the walk they are asking for canned goods donations and monetary donations to help fund the program.

The event will kick off at 7 a.m., on Sat., Sept. 26.
