Straughn picks up pair of region sweeps

Andalusia and Straughn both knocked of Ashford 3-0, but the Lady Tigers also defeated the Lady Bulldogs 3-0 in region volleyball action Thursday night in Andalusia.

 

Andalusia 25, Ashford 16

 

In the first game of the evening, the Lady Bulldogs marched out front and took a 9-6 lead when Rachel Dayton fired a nice shot over the net.

The Lady Yellow Jackets battled back to bring it within one point when Haley Harper hit a smash to give the Lady Bulldogs a 10-8 advantage.

A few points later, Merikal McCaskill drilled a shot to put Andalusia on top 15-12.

The Lady Bulldogs then went on a 5-0 run capped off by tricky drop shot from Tori English.

Dayton got another big shot to put the Lady Bulldogs on top 24-15 to help lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 25-16 win.

 

Andalusia 25, Ashford 14

The second contest started off much like the first, with the Lady Bulldogs coming out of the gate strong, and Dayton got a big point to start the contest that helped the Lady Bulldogs start with a 5-0 run.

Harper put the Lady Bulldogs up 7-3 with an ace, and then McCaskill put the score at 8-3 with a strong shot.

A few points later, McCaskill made a great shot with her back to the net to put the Lady Bulldogs up 9-3.

Harper picked up another ace a few plays later to put Andalusia up 17-11.

Another big point from McCaskill, increased the lead to 22-11 during a 10-0 rally by the Lady Bulldogs.

Ashford picked up three-straight points before Andalusia finished off the game with a 25-14 victory.

 

Andalusia 25, Ashford 20

The Lady Yellow Jackets opened up the third game strong, and went on top 8-6 when English hammered a shot to make the score 8-7.

Both teams battled back-and-forth, before Andalusia was finally able to take the lead at 16-15.

Caroline Andrews put the Lady Bulldogs up 19-17 with a big kill shot, and English increased the lead to 20-17 with a strong point.

Another kill from English, then put Andalusia up 21-19, and McCaskill got a big block to move the lead up to 22-19.

Dayton finished off the Lady Yellow Jackets with a kill shot that gave Andalusia a 25-20 victory.

 

Straughn 25, Ashford 2

To say it as all Straughn in the first match against Ashford would be an understatement, as the Lady Tigers swatted the Lady Yellow Jackets on the way to a 25-2 win.

Meredith Rogers helped get things going with an ace to take a 9-1 lead early in the game.

Ashley Hughes put the Lady Tigers up 11-1 when she dropped a ball just out of the reach of any Lady Yellow Jackets.

Rogers picked up two more aces, as the Lady Tigers darted out to 21-1 lead.

Ashford finally managed to get a second point, but the Lady Tigers broke serve after just one attempt.

Derriunna Gantt then picked up where Rogers left off, as she picked up an ace to give the Lady Tigers a 23-2 advantage.

Gantt and the Lady Tigers finished off the Lady Yellow Jackets for a 25-2 victory in game one.

 

Straughn 25, Ashford 22

In the second game, the Lady Yellow Jackets put up more of a fight, but ultimately fell to the Lady Tigers 25-22.

Hughes crushed a ball back over the net for a kill to give the Lady Tigers a 5-3 lead.

Ashford then battled back and took a 7-6 lead before the Lady Tigers clawed their way back into it.

Two-straight points from Lexie Cottle during a four point Straughn rally put the Lady Tigers back on top 10-7.

Straughn took a 14-9 lead when Sarah Langford picked up her first ace of the contest.

Ashford continued to battle and trimmed the Lady Tigers lead down to one, which forced Straughn’s coach, Daniel Rodgers, to call timeout.

The timeout paid off, as the Lady Tigers went on a 6-2 run to take a 23-17 lead.

Ashford wasn’t ready to give in, and they clawed back with a 5-0 run to bring the score to 23-22.

The Lady Tigers picked up a point on the next serve, and then Gantt capped off the set with tip shot over the defenders to give the Lady Tigers a 25-22 win.

 

Straughn 25, Ashford 5

It was all Lady Tigers in the final game of the series, as the Straughn walked away with a 25-5 win.

Gantt got the game jump started with a powerful kill shot to take a 1-0 lead.

Langford followed with an ace, Hannah Lawless made the score 3-0 with a kill and then Rogers picked up a kill for a 4-0 lead.

Gantt picked up another big point a few shots later that put the Lady Tigers on top 7-0.

Ashford finally got a point of a Lady Tiger error, but the Lady Tigers went right back to work and made the score 11-1.

Lawless picked up another kill in the contest, and also three aces.

Gantt, Rogers and Hughes also had aces in the Lady Tigers 25-5 victory.

 

Straughn 25, Andalusia 15

In a hard-fought contest between region rivals, the Lady Tigers downed the Lady Bulldogs 25-15 in their first match.

Andalusia got the first point of the match, but Lawless tied the contest with a kill shot and then gave the Lady Tigers the lead.

The Lady Bulldogs tied the contest up 3-3, but another kill from Lawless a few shots later put the Lady Tigers up 6-4.

After falling behind 8-4, three-straight points from the Lady Bulldogs, including a kill from Taran Carrasco, made the score 8-7.

The Lady Tigers went on top 14-10 on an ace from Langford.

Back-to-back kills from Gantt and Hughes and then an ace from Rogers gave the Lady Tigers a 19-12 lead.

A kill from Gantt, put the Lady Tigers up 22-14.

Lawless got another kill to make the 23-15 as the Lady Tigers went on to a 25-15 win.

 

Straughn 25, Andalusia 8

The Lady Tigers come out on fire in the second set, as they rolled up 16 unanswered points to start the contest on their way to a 25-8 win.

Lawless gave the Lady Tigers a quick 2-0 with a block and kill for the first two points of the game.

Another kill from Lawless then put the Lady Tigers on top 5-0.

Lawless remained the focal point as she picked up two more kills and a block to give the Lady Tigers a 12-0 lead.

The last point of the 16-0 run came off a tremendous block from Gantt.

The Lady Bulldogs picked up two-consecutive points before turning the serve back over to the Lady Tigers.

Gantt picked up another kill to put the Lady Tigers on top 19-2.

The Lady Bulldogs weren’t going to go down easy, and strong points from English and Andrews made the score 23-8.

Straughn followed with two points to end the contest.

 

Straughn 25, Andalusia 19

Both teams battled it out in the final match, but it was the Straughn Lady Tigers who came away with a 25-19 win.

Hughes put the Lady Tigers up 5-3 with a strong block at the net.

A kill from Lawless put the Lady Tigers up 8-5.

English picked up a kill that decreased the lead to 10-6, but Hughes answered right back with a kill to go up 11-6.

Harper then picked up a big point with smart push over the net to decrease the Lady Tigers’ lead to 13-9.

It wasn’t long before Gantt picked up another block, and Lawless followed with a punishing kill to put the Lady Tigers up 16-9.

McCaskill then got the serve back for the Lady Bulldogs and started a 3-0 run that trimmed the lead to 19-13.

A few shots later, Rogers put the Lady Tigers up 24-18 with a strong kill, and Gantt capped off the night with another thunderous kill to give the Lady Tigers a 25-18 win.
