A Florala police officer recently went to the ER – and a man went to jail – after an incident in municipal court in which the officer was assaulted and the defendant was tased.

Police Chief Sonny Bedsole said the defendant in a harassment case appeared in municipal court last week, and appeared to be under the influence of something. Municipal Judge John Jones ordered a field sobriety test, Bedsole said.

As the officers escorted him from the building, he attempted to assault both officers. He elbowed one officer in the temple twice, and caused some bruising. Officers used a taser to subdue the man.

Bedsole said the man was placed in jail on contempt charges, and was later charged with felony assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

The officer was treated and released.
