Andalusia standout running back Jamal Hourel has had a breakout season and was recently selected as a candidate for the Alabama News High School Highsman.

Hourel was given the nomination after putting up 156 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, in last week’s 42-24 victory over Montgomery Catholic.

In his junior season, Hourel has put up staggering numbers and has been a large part of the Bulldogs’ 8-1 season, to this point.

Hourel has rushed for 1,748 yards and 23 touchdowns on 152 carries. On the season, he averages 11.5 yards per carry and 194.2 yards a game.

According to maxpreps.com, Hourel is the state’s top rusher by 400 yards.

While Hourel’s stats won’t come close to the Alabama state record of 3,483 yards, he is chasing down the Andalusia record of 2,200 yards set by Bobby Ray Johnson in 1976.

Hourel will have one more regular season game and at least one playoff game to add to his stats. Hourel would need to average just over 200 yards for the next two games to break the record, but if the Bulldogs were to make a deep run into the playoffs, Hourel wouldn’t need 200 yards a game to pass the record.

This week the Bulldogs will go up against Class 4A, Region 2 and cross-county rival Straughn.

After the Straughn game, the Bulldogs will take a week off before beginning their trek into the 2015 AHSAA state playoffs.

Andalusia will host either West Blocton or Oak Grove in the first round of the playoffs.
