With the Opp VFW post now defunct, AMVETS asked the City of Opp permission to take possession of a monument for fallen soldiers.

AMVETS head James Clifton said that the VFW property had been sold and the monument needs to be removed to make room for a sign.

“We have one monument that lists those killed in World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam,” he said.

Clifton asked the city to help move the monument to the city cemetery on Brantley Street.

Councilman TD Morgan asked why the monument couldn’t go in the veterans park the city is currently spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring to fruition.

“Veterans Park is a place of life and to have a good time,” Clifton said. “We want to give these people the respect they deserve.”

Clifton said they would place the monument facing Brantley Street.

Morgan wanted to know about the two cannons that were at the VFW.

Clifton said they are currently being restored and would be taken to the Veterans Park.
