High-flying Bulldogs move into championship game

1220-spt-Trevor-ParkerThe Andalusia Bulldogs punched their ticket to the championship game of the 49th annual Andalusia Invitational Tournament with a 67-49 victory over the Red Level Tigers on Friday night.

Andalusia got on the board first when Trevor Parker found Ian Peek under the goal for an easy bucket.

After Red Level got on the board with a pair of free throws from Jeffery Perdue, Andalusia got a big 3-pointer from Ke’Shun Townsend.

A few minutes later, B.J. Anderson came up with a steal around half court and took it down to the other end of the court for a monster dunk.

Anderson added another basket before the end of the first and Red Level’s Devon Dexter accounted for 6 points in the period.

At the end of the first, Andalusia was on top 14-12.

Townsend opened up the second period with a deep 3-ball and was fouled in the process, but failed to convert the free throw.

Dexter responded with a layup to cut Andalusia’s lead down to 17-14, but a Bulldog rally followed to stretch out the lead.

A 10-2 Andalusia rally helped give the Bulldogs a 29-16 lead with a little over three minutes left before halftime.

Parker and Anderson then added  3-pointers for the Bulldogs, and Dexter and Javarius Grooms each hit 3-pointers for Red Level over the next four possessions.

At halftime, Andalusia held a 37-25 advantage.

Hunter Carpenter opened up the scoring for Red Level in the third period with a 3-pointer and then a steal that he converted into a layup.

Jaxon Rudolph then put Andalusia up 41-30 with an layup off an assist from Parker.

Rudolph added another basket a minute later when he grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up for two points.

Carpenter added another 3-pointer at the end of the third period, but his Tigers trailed 49-36 heading into the final period.

R.J. Drish got Andalusia on the board first in the fourth with a 1-for-2 effort at the free-throw line.

Drish added three more points over the next two minutes to give Andalusia 53-41 lead.

Andalusia got the lead up 61-45, but the Tigers refused to give in and began to mount a comeback attempt.

Carpenter drove through the lane and converted a quick layup, and then Perdue got a steal and layup to cut the lead to 61-49 with 2:37 left in the game.

Dexter continued his hot shooting with a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 61-52.

Anderson put lead back up to 11 when he knocked down both ends of a 1-and-1 opportunity, but Red Level responded with a bucket from Ontaryo Nearor to cut the lead back down to nine points.

After Andalusia got a free throw from Glen Crayton, Dexter buried another 3-pointer to leave the Tigers trailing 64-57 with 56.7 seconds left on the clock.

A missed free throw gave Red Level back the ball with under 30 seconds left and Dameyune Scott dropped in a layup to make it 64-59.

Red Level quickly fouled and sent Parker to line for two free throws.

Parker knocked down 1-of-2 to give the Bulldogs a 65-59 lead.

Red Level couldn’t score on their next possession and Parker knocked down two more free throws with eight seconds left on the clock to give Andalusia a 67-59 win.

Anderson led the Bulldogs in scoring with 19 points.

“We started off good, but we got sloppy at the end,” Andalusia head coach Marshall Locke said. “We have to get better and learn how to play a complete game.”

Andalusia and Straughn will play tonight at 8:30 for the tournament championship.
