It may be Christmas week, but forget about snow or icy conditions for the Jolly Ole Elf to fly into Covington County.

Forecasters say temperatures will be unseasonably warm and will generate instability across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and a possibly a thunderstorm are expected today, with a high near 74.

Tonight, showers and a potential thunderstorm are expected. A low will be around 65.

Forecasters say by this afternoon and into the evening, a stronger storm could develop in the southern half of the state.

They predict that the main threat would be damaging wind gusts.

Wednesday, showers and thunderstorms are expected before 10 a.m., with a high near 80.

Wednesday night showers and thunderstorms are forecast, with a low around 67.

Forecaster says a trough to the west will help ramp up wind fields by Wednesday afternoon. There’s a potential for a substantial threat of severe weather.

It’s still unclear where that threat could go.

On Christmas Eve, showers and thunderstorms could come before 7 a.m., then showers are likely with a possibility of a thunderstorm after 7. A high of 79 is expected.

As Santa makes his way into town, the chance of rain is expected to be 60 percent, with a low of 70.

On Christmas Day, there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m., with a high near 81.

“Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches with locally higher amounts will be possible through Sunday,” NWS forecasters said. “Some localized flooding of low terrain and poor drainage areas will be possible. Strong to possibly severe storms may occur mainly Wednesday through Wednesday night.”
