Those interesting in learning sign language will have the opportunity in the coming weeks at LBWCC.

Jennifer Hall, continuing education coordinator, said that they received a lot of requests for the class.

“We decided to offer this course after receiving requests from friends and family of deaf and hearing-impaired individuals, church members and health care professionals,” she said. “Sign language is sometimes the only way for some people to communicate. By learning even the basics, it can allow better understanding with someone who might otherwise feel alone in their own world. We are excited to offer this course for our community.”

Hall said those who sign up for the class will learn the basics of sign language, which will include the American sign language alphabet, questions and common expressions, numbers, money, time, signing etiquette and communicating with people in the deaf community.

The class will be held for eight-weeks on Mondays, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., from Feb. 1, through March 21.

Classes will be held in the administration building, room 210 on the Andalusia campus.

Cost is $115 per participant and includes the book.

Hall said space is limited.

Students may register in the student services office Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and on Friday from 8 a.m. until noon.
