Lady Tigers earn spot in Regionals with overtime win

It took overtime, but the Straughn Lady Tigers clinched a spot in the Class 4A South Regional in Dothan with a 47-40 victory over the St. James Lady Trojans Tuesday night in Straughn.

Straughn got on the board first when Harley Adcock dropped in a short jumper off an assist from Baylee Wilson.

Brentley Armstrong then drove the lane strong for a layup and Harley Adcock followed with a layup to give the Lady Tigers a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Trojans rallied back and took an 8-6 advantage late in the first period.

Lexi Hooks put the Lady Tigers back on top 9-8 with a big 3-pointer, but St. James picked up a pair of free throws to give them a 10-9 lead at the end of the first period.

At the start of the second period, Harley Adcock opened with a jumper to put Straughn up 11-10, but St. James followed with a 3-pointer to retake the lead.

Hooks tied it back up with layup, and St. James answered with a pair of free throws with 39 seconds left in the half to take 15-13 lead.

Sarah Kate Shiver knotted the game up at 15-15, but once again a pair of free throws put St. James on top.

Armstrong made a strong drive and layup to tie the game at 17-17 heading into halftime.

In the third period, St. James jumped out to a 21-17 lead, but Harley Adcock buried a 3-pointer to make 21-20 with 6:50 left.

Carley Adcock then tied the game 21-21 with a free throw.

The lead continued to flip-flop until the Lady Tigers picked up 6 straight points to take a 29-25 lead into the final period.

Both teams fought it out in the fourth period and Harley Adcock put the Lady Tigers up 37-35 with 41 seconds left in regulation, but St. James picked up a layup with 27 seconds left to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Harley Adcock led the Lady Tigers with 15 points and Armstrong added 10 points.

“I’m just so pleased with our girls tonight,” Straughn head coach Scott Kinsaul said. “We have been in some close games this year that we just weren’t able to finish. We learned from that and tonight we finished. St. James has a great program and great coach, so we were just fortunate to come away with a win. Once again our fans and students were exceptional.”

The Lady Tigers will play at 9 a.m., Monday for the first round of the Class 4A South Regional in Dothan.
