Opp to become Purple Heart City

The City of Opp will soon become the next Purple Heart City.

Opp resident Ed Sansom, a U.S. Navy combat-wounded Purple Heart veteran, approached the city council Monday night and asked if the city would be interested in becoming a Purple Heart City.

Sansom told the council that all he needed from them was a proclamation making it a Purple Heart City.

“It is no cost to the city,” he said.

Sansom said he would get the state commander to come down from Montgomery and do a presentation after the city issued a proclamation.

Signs will be erected at the arteries going into the city.

“This is again no cost to the city,” he said. “It will be furnished by the Purple Hearts.”

Additionally, Sansom is working with local businesses to designate special Purple Heart parking.

So far, five businesses in Opp and five businesses in Andalusia have committed.

“I think that once we get some erected, we’ll get more exposure,” he said.

It is sacred to those who understand.

Mayor John Bartholomew said that they would have a Purple Heart Day for the city, as well.
