Red Level Elementary School students dressed up and held a parade Monday morning to kick off “Read Across America Week.”

The students selected books to read and then on Monday they came to school dressed as characters from their books.

Kindergarten student Hayden Johnson selected the book “Little Red Riding Hood” and came dressed up as the title character.

“I like that she isn’t afraid of anything,” Johnson said of why she picked Little Red Riding Hood. “My favorite part was the ending when she is nice to the wolf. I liked that because I like it when people are kind.”

Third grader Christian Breau dressed as baseball player Matt Christopher from the book of the same name.

“I picked it because I’m a big baseball fan,” Breau said. “My favorite part was when he hit a home run in his first at bat.”

Third graders Laura Leigh Grimes and Bailey Green each dressed up as one of the three little pigs.

“My favorite part was when the wolf fell down the chimney into the pot and they cooked him,” Grimes said.

Like Grimes, Green also picked “The Three Little Pigs.”

“When the wolf couldn’t blow the brick house down,” Green said of her favorite part of the story. “I also learned that you never let strangers in your house.”
