The River Falls Town council this week voted to move forward on a $5,000 project that would update a decades-old zoning ordinance and map.

Darrell Rigsby of the Southeast Regional Planning and Development Commission told council members that Mayor Patricia Gunter contacted him months ago about updating the zoning map and zoning ordinance.

He said the current map and ordinance dates back to the 1970s.

Rigsby said the commission would help the town revise its zoning map and any text that needs to be updated to better suit the town’s current needs.

“We can make it fit and do what River Falls wants,” he said. “We need to make it where it’s enforceable and manageable and we’ll update the map to where it can be read easily for you to know what’s industrial, residential and business.”

Rigsby said the maps would line up 100 percent with the tax maps.

Gunter said currently they can’t tell what property is business, residential or industrial.

Councilmember Gary Wages said the project was just another one they would have to do.
