LBWCC students to give back

LBW Community College is sponsoring “The Big Event,” a half day of service projects for area residents, on April 9, 2016, in Andalusia, as a way for students to say “thank you” for the support from the community.
“We need residents in our community to let us know how we can help for a few hours on that Saturday morning,” said LBWCC Dean of Student Affairs Jason Jessie.
Students, faculty, and staff will show their gratitude to the community by completing various tasks at area businesses, schools, churches or residents’ homes, such as raking leaves, moving dirt, washing windows, cleaning gutters, painting, and other types of activities that residents need.
“Participating in The Big Event is a great opportunity for students to learn selfless service and area residents to get work done around their homes,” said Jessie.
“It’s not about how many jobs are completed or how many students participate, but rather fosters interaction between students and residents and builds unity throughout the community.”
The Big Event was created in 1982 by the Student Government Association at Texas A&M University, and has grown across the nation to include 72 events at colleges and universities.
“As far as we know, LBW will be the first community college in Alabama to get involved in The Big Event.”
Jessie said area businesses can help get the word out to the community by including information in any signage they may have or allow students to place posters in their businesses.
“Area residents should understand that this is a volunteer service by our students and employees, and there is no cost involved for their labor during The Big Event.”
Those who want the service of LBWCC students must complete a job request form by March 25th. Forms are available on the Andalusia campus in the Library, the Administration Building and the Student Services office or by calling (334) 881-2256.
