Opp Mayor: Compromise in works on bond

Though the bond issue refinance was not on the Opp City Council agenda Monday night, Opp Mayor John Bartholomew said he and Superintendent Michael Smithart are working on a compromise.

Four of the five city council members visited the Opp City Schools’ board meeting last week, where Smithart presented a proposal to the board and gave copies to council members.

That proposal calls for fixing the roof at the library, the awning at Channell-Lee Stadium and upgrading the Opp City Schools’ network infrastructure.

Councilwoman Mary Brundidge told Bartholomew she wanted to discuss the bond issue.

“So you won’t say it’s the council’s fault, we need to have a called meeting,” Brundidge said.

Bartholomew told council members once they reached a compromise, he would call a special meeting.

The bond issue refinance stems from a 2007 portion of bonds that were used to pay for the Opp Elementary School. The mayor and superintendent have disagreed on who should get the money since late January.
