Search on for local who escaped DOC Tuesday

A Covington County inmate in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections on work release in Coffee County escaped from his job site on Tuesday afternoon.

Joseph Thomas Butts, 28, left his assigned job location in Elba at about 12:30 p.m., according to the Department of Corrections. He is an inmate at Elba Work Release Center.

Butts was convicted in here in 2014 on the charge of manufacturing a controlled substance. He was sentenced to serve 12 years and 6 months in jail.

Butts is white, 6-foot 1 inch tall and weighs about 150 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt with “New Orleans” written across it and brown cargo points.
