Students’ scores get state attention

Opp Elementary Schools saw a significant growth in their state testing results, especially in third grade math.

Because of the substantial increase, PARCA, an organization which works with local school systems to analyze performances and build comparisons between similar –sized school systems and the state, will visit the system in the coming weeks to find out what local educators did to increase results.

OCS Superintendent Michael Smithart said he knows that the improved results are a testament to the hard work of his teachers.

Alabama students in third through eighth grades take the ACT ASPIRE and are tested on reading, math and science. In 10th grade, the subjects are English, math and science.

According to parcalabama.org, a student who scores at or above proficient is considered to be on track for his or her grade level. Students who stay on track should be able to succeed in on the college readiness test, the ACT.

For third grade math, 68 percent of OCS third graders were proficient in 2015. That was up from 42 percent in 2014. In fourth grade, 59 percent were proficient in 2015, where 55 percent were proficient in 2014. Fifth grade math also saw an increase from 34 percent in 2014 to 58 percent in 2015. Sixth grade math increased from 44 percent to 54 percent. Seventh grade math was up to 37 percent from just 17 percent. In Eighth grade, the jump was from 26 percent to 29 percent.
