A motion to consider a proposal for legislation for locals voters to cast votes by district instead of at-large died for lack of a second at Wednesday’s county commission meeting.

County Commissioner Harold Elmore made a motion to ask Rep. Mike Jones to draft legislation that would allow for voting to be done by district.

Elmore said that’s what his constituents want.

“Some of my constituents called and said that Andalusia elected our commissioner,” he said. “Andalusia is heavily populated.”

Elmore said the person elected by the Florala area for the District 3 hasn’t been elected by at-large in years.

Chairman Bill Godwin said that if the body approves the request to Rep. Jones asking him to introduce the new legislation, he would determine when the legislature could get to it.

Godwin said that if Jones got the request and saw that he could not get to it this legislative session, he would have time to prepare it for the 2017 session.

“So, I think it’s good to go ahead and begin the procedure,” he said.

After Godwin called for second and no commissioner moved for a second, Elmore said, “I knew the other commissioners weren’t going to be for it.”

Elmore said as long as he’s commissioner, he’s going to stand up for his constituents.

Godwin said that they did not like the legislature telling them what to do.

Commissioner Kenneth Northey said that he wasn’t saying that Elmore’s ideas were bad, he just knows the process would be in depth.

“I know that the lines have to be redrawn,” he said. “We need to know how in depth it is.”

Commissioner Carl Turman said there would also be a lot of cost involved.
