Some 235 students receive extra food each week from a group of local who are actively fighting childhood hunger in the community.

The Full Tummies project is a non-denominational ministry that is designed to provide a small bag of food on Fridays for children in the local schools who are at risk for hunger on the weekends.

Children who qualify for the project are determined by the school administration and their identities are kept confidential.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack items are discreetly placed in the child’s backpack at a time when children are not in the classroom.

To raise money for the growing ministry, the organization is hosting its second annual golf tournament on May 16, at the Andalusia Country Club.

Lunch will be at noon followed by a 1 p.m. start.

“This is a fun way for us to raise money,” said Andrea Hindmon of the group. “This year’s charity golf classic is dedicated to the loving memory of Jon Sellers.”

Teams of four are needed and the cost is $400 per team.

Hole sponsors are also needed for $100 per hole.

Sponsors who commit before May 2 will have their names printed on all printed materials and the T-shirt.

T-shirts are on sale for $15 for short sleeves and $25 for long sleeves.

Hindmon said raffle items are also needed.

The program started in 2014 by serving K-2 at five local schools – Andalusia, Opp, Straughn, Pleasant Home and Red Level – with around 40 students.

The program now includes grades elementary school grades at the same local schools.
