The new domestic violence shelter has named a new director.

Cindy Howard of the Bethesda House board of directors said Tuesday that the board has chosen Beth Maddox to serve as the new executive director.

Maddox is a long-time resident of the area and is an Andalusia High School graduate.

She has worked for the Department of Human Resources for 26 years and holds a social work license.

“We are excited,” Howard said. “She worked for DHR for many years. She has great experience working with state agencies and grant programs. Her background is in social work and she has a great passion and enthusiasm in helping victims of domestic violence.”

Howard said there were a small number of applicants for the job and Maddox stood out above the rest.

“She was clearly the right fit for us,” she said.

Maddox said when she started working at DHR, she knew abuse existed, both child as well as domestic.

“I really didn’t know the magnitude of how much is in our county,” she said. “Of course, as I continued working there, my eyes were opened. People in the community don’t realize how much of a need there is and how much abuse goes on. I love working with victims and helping them get back on their feet.”

Maddox’s first priority is providing leadership for re-opening the shelter and the ongoing services that will be provided through it.

“My main goal is getting the house open and recertified to provide the services,” she said. “I will also focus on public service to help educate the public and advocate for victims. We are starting new and I want people to know this is such as worthwhile cause.”

Howard said they are sort of on track, but expects that the house won’t open in July as planned.

“We will most likely open a little later,” she said. “We are trying to get the building in shape. I’m meeting with Beth today and we are going to set the goals and priorities.”

She is married to Brent Maddox and they have two children and two grandchildren.
