Opp’s Bradley Cassady battled through a playoff to earn a spot in the AHSAA Class 3A golf state tournament in Huntsville.

“It feels really good,” Cassady said. “It’s like all my hard work is finally paying off.”

Cassady and four other members of the Opp golf team qualified for the section tournament held at Lagoon Golf Course in Montgomery on April 25.

They then qualified for the sub-state tournament held on May 2 at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery.

The team placed fourth overall out of eight teams.

Falling to Indian Springs School, Bayside Academy, and T.R. Miller. They defeated Montgomery Academy, Susan Moore, Oakman, and American Christian Academy.

The top two teams advance as well as the top two individuals not on one of the top teams advance to the state tournament held in Huntsville at Hampton Cove on May 9 and 10.

Opp’s Cassady was one of four boys with low score as an individual forcing a playoff hole.

“I was pretty nervous going into the playoff,” Cassady said. “After the first playoff hole, one guy went out and it eased my nerves some.”

At the end of the playoff hole, the number was down to three. It took two more playoff holes before a second was eliminated.

On the third playoff hole, Cassady’s tee-shot went right and left him with a shot from the rough.

Cassady followed with a strong 3-wood shot that landed just short of the green and allowed Cassady to rally for par.

The par shot placed Cassady in a tie with one other player, and both players move on the state tournament.

Cassady shot par on each playoff hole advancing him to the state tournament.

“I’m looking forward to playing on very nice course I’ve never played before,” Cassady said. “I get to play golf for free and play against some very good golfers… I’m very excited about the oppourtunity.
