More than a year after a shooting near Florala left an 18-year-old dead, no arrests have been made.

Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Friday as far as he knows, the case has not yet been presented to the grand jury.

0507-BritoChristopher James Brito of Country Cross Roads was shot on April 30, 2015.

At the time, Chief Deputy David Anderson said that deputies were dispatched to a residence at Country Ross Roads near Florala at around 9:30 p.m.

“When they arrived on scene, they discovered a male that was deceased, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” he said. “Investigators are working this death scene to determine the cause of the shooting.”

Anderson also said the other subject involved was Christopher Francis Brito, 57, who he identified as the young man’s father.

A week after the shooting, Meeks told the Star-News that he didn’t think there would be an outright arrest.

“There’s a possibility it might go to the grand jury, but I can’t say right now for sure as the investigation is still under way,” he said.

Brito’s mother, Donna Mazzaferro, said the shooting happened in front of her 12-year-old daughter.

“It’s been a year and nothing,” she said.
