Crenshaw County law enforcement officials are investigating what they believe is a homicide after they found a body in the woods about 12 miles from Dozier.

The body was found off of Cameron Chapel Road, which is located off of Alabama Hwy. 106, Wednesday morning.

Crenshaw County Sheriff Mickey Powell and his team are not releasing the identity pending a DNA test.

Powell did say he is positive the victim is not the missing Highland Home teenager Alissia Freeman.

“We’re 99 percent sure who it is, but we’re doing a DNA test to confirm that,” Powell said. “We can’t be 100 percent sure until the DNA is back. They should start working on the body (Thursday) and it will tell us more about how the subject died.”

Currently, the sheriff’s office has identified the body as belonging to a male.

The sheriff says that residents should not be fearful.

“This is an ongoing investigation, but we really don’t feel like anybody here in the county is in any kind of danger,” he said. “We just have to wait to get our reports back before any arrests are made.”
