It was truly a take me out to the ballpark moment for Andalusia’s Jan White on Friday.
White won a recent radio contest on Faith Radio and was given the chance to throw out the first pitch at the Montgomery Biscuits game.
“I was the eighth correct caller in a contest on Faith Radio,” White said. “First, I got two free tickets to the game and a few days later (Montgomery Biscuits officials) sent me a Facebook message asking me if I would like the throw out a first pitch at a Biscuits game.”
White said she hesitant at first, and thought about letting her husband Greg take the pitch.
“I really wasn’t sure about it at first,” White said. “I’ve never done anything like that so I thought about let getting Greg throw it for me, but the more I got to thinking about the more I realized I wanted to do it. Besides, Greg has had the chance to throw out a first pitch before at a local tournament.”
After deciding she would make the pitch, White said that she and Greg spent a lot time working on her throwing mechanics.
“I didn’t want to embarrass myself so I practiced a lot with Greg before,” White said. “I’ve never really thrown a pitch before so he had to show me what to do with my feet and everything.”
The night of White’s first pitch was a match up between the Biscuits and the Tennessee Smokies.
The Biscuits also held Family Faith Night at the ballpark where they invited many church groups from around the state and recognized the ministers before the game.
Just before the game, White and four other contest winners went on to the field to throw out one pitch each.
“It was an exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” White said. “It was just a lot of fun.”
As for the pitch, White said she got the ball across the plate.
“I’ll call it a sinker,” White said of the pitch. “It got to the plate, but it hit the dirt before it got to the catcher.”
