July 5 qualifying set for August city elections

In Andalusia, Babbie, Carolina, Florala, Gantt, Heath, Horn Hill, Libertyville, Lockart, Onycha, Opp, Red Level, River Falls, Sanford, 2016 is the year of municipal elections.

Here’s a primer on elections.

 

Candidates

To seek the office of mayor or city council, a candidate must:

• Be 18

• Have been a resident of the city and state for 90 days prior to election.

• Be a U.S. Citizen.

• Be registered to vote.

 

Candidates must:

• Qualify at the town hall of the municipality.

• Pay qualifying fees.

• Simultaneously file a statement of economic interests form with the State Ethics Commission.

• Report campaign contributions and spending.

 

2016 election dates

July 5 – candidates can begin qualifying.

July 19 – Last day to qualify to run for municipal office. Form must be filed by 5 p.m., Central Daylight Time, with the municipal clerk.

Aug. 8 – Last day to register to vote in municipal elections.

Aug. 23 – Election day. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Oct. 4 – Runoff election day if needed.

Nov. 7 – Newly elected officials take office.
