County fights hard, fall in district tourney

BREWTON- The Covington County 9U and 10U teams were knocked off by the Opp 10U All-Stars at the district tournament in Brewton.

 

OPP 18, 

COVINGTON COUNTY 3

Opp’s 10U squad picked up an 18-3 win over the Covington County 9U All-Stars in the second game of the tournament.

Opp got things started strong with four runs in the top of the first inning. Ballard singled start the game and Danford followed with a run scoring single.

Coon then hammered a double to left that allowed Danford to score.

Hall scored on passed ball to put Opp on top 4-0.

Covington County responded in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own.

Walks to Clark Gay and Logan Jordan and a hit batter loaded up the bases for the Covington County 9U All-Stars.

Clark Jordan then drew a walk to make it 4-1. Passed balls allowed Logan Jordan and Landen Stokes to come across the plate to make the score 4-3 heading into the second inning.

Opp got a spark in the top of the third inning and went on top 11-3. Lane drove in a run with fielder’s choice and Danford added an RBI single.

Scoggins got Opp going with a two-RBI single to center in the top of the fourth inning to make it 13-3. Trey Bradley followed with a single that scored Scoggins.

Back-to-back run scoring doubles from Danford and Coon gave Opp an 18-3 victory.

Coon finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Danford went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Coon got the win the on the mound for Opp.

Clark Jordan drove in one run for Covington County.

 

OPP 4, 

COVINGTON COUNTY 3

The Covington County 10U All-Stars grabbed an early lead, but the Opp 10U All-Stars where able to pick up a 4-3 to put them in the district championship game.

Danford got the first batter to ground out before John Barrett Williams drew a walk to put Covington County in business.

Parker Adams ripped 1-1 pitch to center for an RBI triple to Covington County on top 1-0.

Ryan Cobb followed with a single that scored Adams and had Covington County out front 2-0.

Opp tied the game 2-2 after an error off the bat of Coon led to Danford and Ballard scoring.

After Opp tied the game 2-2 and had the go-ahead runner at third, Covington County starting pitcher Cobb struck out the next three batters to put and end to the inning.

Danford returned the favor as he struck out three batters in the top of the second.

Opp grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning after a single from Danford allowed Bradley to score from third.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Opp tacked on another run.

Danford tripled to start the inning and then scored on sacrifice from Coon to put Opp on top 4-2.

Javen Poindexter got things going with an infield single in the top of the sixth inning for Covington County.

Poindexter stole second and then moved up to third on a single from Williams.

Adams then drove in Poindexter with line drive single to center.

With the tying run on third and no outs, Danford dug deep and came up with two big strikeouts. Danford got the final batter to ground harmlessly to second to give Opp a 4-2 victory.

Adams led the way for the Covington County 10U All-Stars going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.

Danford finished the game 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Coon drove in three runs in the win for Opp.
