Local residents involved in Florala’s Carver Center are asking the community to step up and help them re-roof the building.

Joe Elmore Barnes of the center said Monday that there is a horrible roof leak.

The Carver Community Center provide educational and recreational services to the community.

“It’s on the side of the building and it has been patched several times,” he said. “We had a contractor come look and it and he said it wasn’t worth patching again.”

Barnes said the recommendation was to get the section taken off and replaced.

The estimate for that portion to be replaced is between $8,000 and $10,000, he said.

“It’s in such bad shape, we can’t use the rooms there,” he said. “We have a computer system and a game room set up for the kids.”

The computer system was recently donated to the center to help train young people and seniors. The computers are ready for use, but the room is leaking so badly that the room cannot be used.

Barnes said they are trying to raise money to re-roof the whole building.

That is estimated at $15,000.

“We can’t repair the rooms until we get the roof fixed,” he said. “We have some bad water damage.”

The weekend and Monday rains didn’t help either, he said.

One of the rooms smells of mold.

“We need to provide a healthy environment for our children and seniors,” said Hazel Lee of the center. “We will need to remove the insulation, clean out the mold and replace the insulation and the roof. With your help, we will get it done.”

On the center’s gofundme page, $450 of the $15,000 has been raised.
