Today is, literally, Bubba’s Day.

Mayor Earl Johnson has declared June 11, 2016, “Charles ‘Bubba’ Bailey Day” in Andalusia, “in honor of his dedication to the City of Andalusia and to bring awareness to the fundraising efforts made by the Andalusia Police Department to help with Bubba’s medical expenses.”

The former Andalusia Police Department sergeant recently was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and a block party is planned this afternoon at Springdale to assist with his expenses.

Friday afternoon, Brandy Hudson, who is helping organize the event, said members of the APD had pre-sold sold 473 barbecue plates. There will be approximately 100 more plates available for sale during the event, she said.

The event begins at 4 p.m., with plates available until 7 p.m. In addition to the barbecue, she said, there is a “huge bake sale,” and 20 to 30 people have donated baked goods.

The Burning Bush Family will open the evening with a few of their favorite selections, and the Krooked Kilts will perform. Music will continue until 8 p.m. Donations in place of admission will be accepted.

Activities for children also are planned on the grounds.
