Opp falls in tough contest with Brewton

The Opp 12U All-Stars jumped on top of Brewton early Friday night in the second round of the Cal Ripken district tournament in Andalusia, but Brewton rallied for a 14-10 victory.

A quick out got the game started with Opp at the plate, but back-to-back singles from Robbie Gafford and Ethan Cox got the Bobcats in business.

Walt Spurlin followed with a rip over the head of the left fielder for a run scoring double to put Opp on the board.

J.T. Dee followed with an RBI single, and then a two-run single from Dawson Booth gave Opp an early 4-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the first, Brewton took advantage of two walks to start then inning and then a two-out RBI single from Trent Cooper put Brewton on the board.

Opp picked things right back up in the top of the second inning with a single from Curt Zorn to start the inning. Zorn then came around to score on a double from Jackson Pierce.

Pierce didn’t stay on the base paths long as Gafford drove him with an RBI single to put Opp on top 6-1.

Opp went up 7-1 in the top of the second inning when Spurlin drove in his second run of the ball game.

Brewton found themselves in a deep hole, but they wouldn’t stay there for long.

Errors allowed Kannan Carter and Logan Rowell to reach base and then bunt single and error on the throw allowed Brewton to cut into the lead.

Brother Pierce then drove in a Rowell on fielder’s choice to second.

Jackson Flores then drove in a run with a fielder’s choice.

Brewton’s final run of the inning came on a dropped third strike with two outs in the inning. At the end of two, Opp was on top 7-6.

Cale Sumblin picked up a one-out double to get Opp started in the top of third inning and came around to score on single up the middle from Zorn.

Gafford extended Opp’s lead to 9-6 with RBI single up the middle of the diamond.

Rowell got Brewton going with single in the bottom of the third and came in to score on single from Bracken Pettis.

Brewton tied the contest a few batters later when Flores and Miller Hart drove in runs to make it 9-9.

An error with two outs allowed two more runs to score to put Brewton up 11-9 at the end of three innings.

Brewton added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth after retiring the Opp batters in order in the top half of the inning.

An error off the bat of Pettis and then a walk to Devin Smith got things started strong for Brewton.

Kyle Blevins followed with a rocket back up the middle that just skipped off the Opp pitcher’s glove and allowed two runs to score to put Brewton on top 13-9 at the end of four innings of play.

The Opp All-Stars went down in order in the top of the fifth inning.

The first two Opp batters were retired to open the top half of the sixth inning, but Cox showed that young Bobcats still had some fight left in them when sent a monster home run sailing over the fence in left.

Spurlin followed with a single, but then a pop up to third ended the ball game and sent Opp into the loser’s bracket.

In today’s tournament action, Opp and Brantley get the day started with a loser’s bracket match up at 11 a.m.

The loser of that game will be eliminated and the winner will go on to play the winner between Covington County and Evergreen at 5 p.m.
