An early morning wreck in Opp sent one to the emergency room and shut down a portion of a downtown thoroughfare for 45 minutes.

Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald said units responded to a one-vehicle crash in the area of College Street and East Cummings Avenue.

“A Toyota 4 Runner was westbound on East Cummings when the vehicle operator fell asleep and drove across the Eastbound lanes of East Cummings Avenue and struck the Bowers’ Auto Parts Store building and a drink machine,” he said. “The vehicle then rolled over onto the driver’s side, blocking the eastbound lanes of East Cummings Avenue.”

Opp Fire Department units extricated the vehicle’s driver.

PrideMark EMS transported the victim to the Mizell Memorial Hospital.

The incident occurred around 7:10 Friday morning.

The name of the victim has not been released.
